Community Description, The Pomfret School
South Pomfret, VT

Our school is called The Pomfret School. Our school is in a rural setting in the central part of Vermont. There are 86 students in our school. We have one of each grade from kindergarten to sixth grade. Our second grade class has 10 students. We have five boys and five girls. About half of our students come to school by bus and the other half are driven in cars. We love our school and think it is a very special place. We have several really unique things here. We have our own maple sugarhouse. In the spring the third graders tap maple trees and gather sap and make yummy maple syrup. All the classes get to join in the fun! We are lucky because we have nature trails and we can spot animal signs. We do a lot of outdoor learning here. (Alex wants you to know that we do a lot of indoor learning too!) We have a beautiful white observatory where we learn about stars, planets and the night sky. On Saturday nights, all year long, the community is invited to come and use the observatory. It is a very popular place!

Our community is very small. Most of the students in our school live in houses, but Austin wants you to know that he lives in an apartment. We have studied our community workers this year, and we learned that we have one general store, one library, two small firehouses, an emergency services building, a town clerk, a log company that Cian's dad works for, and Patrick's dad is our road commissioner. He keeps our roads plowed and in good condition. We do not have big stores or businesses in our town, but we do have a small ski area called Suicide Six. It is a great family ski area. Our school has a Friday afternoon ski program called Ski Runners that many of us go to. The next biggest town is called Woodstock, Vermont. That is just a few miles from here. There we find a new ice arena for skating and a bigger medical facility. We need to go about 20 miles to the nearest hospital which is actually over the state line into New Hampshire. Many people have jobs such as teachers, lawyers, doctors, and small businesses. Justin's mom works at the Billings Farm and Museum. This is up the road from our school and is a very special farm that shows live animals and a museum that shows what early life was like on a Vermont farm. It is also part of the Marsh-Billings National Park.

Our landscape has many rolling hills and valleys. It is a beautiful part of the world. We celebrate all four seasons. Our most famous trees in Vermont are the sugar maple trees that turn beautiful colors in the fall and give us the maple sap in the spring. We also have many evergreen trees and oak, birch and beech trees. We all study a different type of tree each year at our school, because we have a variety of trees on our school grounds. We have many white-tailed deer here. We also have lots of wild turkeys, some coyotes and black bears. We see lots more turkeys and deer though than we see bears!
